How We Met

Barbara and I met Wednesday night, September 2, 1970 at the OBI North, a disco, in Smithtown NY. The OBI was dead that night. I was talking to Danny Quail, a friend of my older brother, Rod, when Barbara's best friend and sorority roommate, Jane Barbato walked up to talk to Danny. While they were chatting, Barbara and I started talking. We hit it off pretty well and hung out together for the rest of the evening. When we were about to leave, Barbara asked me if I wanted to come back to her folks beach house in Wading River to hang out some more. Of course I did.

When we got to the house, I met her mom, her dad was in bed. Barbara and I sat on the couch talking until about 4:00 am.

At one point, I looked over at the stairs going up to the second floor, and I see her three younger sisters peeking, trying to see what we were doing. Of course Barbara got up and tried to chased them back to bed, but they wouldn't go. Barbara's mom came out to see what was going on, and did the chasing instead.

I got Barbara's phone number before I left and told her I'd call her. I finally called her after three days of procrastinating. I kept thinking, "Should I call her?" "Did she like me?" "What if she doesn't want to talk to me?", stuff like that. Her mom told me on the way to the cemetery, that Barbara was doing pretty much the same thing at their house. Until I called, she walked around almost the whole time saying things like, "Why doesn't he call?" "I thought he liked me." "Do you think he'll call?", all that sort of stuff. Her mom just kept telling her, "Barbara, if it's meant to be, he'll call. If he doesn't call, then it wasn't."

I finally got up the courage call three days later. It was after dinner and I got permission to make the call in my mom and dad's room where I could have some privacy. We weren't allowed in there without permission. One of Barbara's younger sisters, I think it was Debbie, answered the phone and it went, from what I can remember, like this.

"Is Barbara there?"

"Who's calling please?"

"This is Tony."

"Hold on please."

She puts down the phone and as she's walking, maybe running, to get Barbara, I could her her saying, "It's him! It's him! He called! He called! Where's Barbara?" Someone says, "I'll get her. "BARBARA! HE'S ON THE PHONE! HURRY!"

I just laughed.

I could hear Barbara say something in the distance, but couldn't make it out. She picked up the phone very calmly and we talked for I don't remember how long, but quite a while. I asked her out on a date that night to go horseback riding. Yeah, I know it's kind of strange for a first date, but I liked horse back riding. She said yes. I was very excited.

That is how it all began.

Thanks, Jacqueline. I have a million stories just like this. I have a feeling you all will be getting quite a bit of them from now on.

On a side note.

I am blessed with an awesome long term memory. Short term, I forget what I went to the store to buy.

When I recall past events, I feel like I'm almost living the whole thing over again. Actually, in my mind I do. The more I get into a story, the more I remember, and the more details I can provide. Maybe one day, if Blogger doesn't screw up and delete all my posts, I'll write a book about myself. I'm sure no one would want to read it, but at least it will be a legacy for my descendants.

What a sweet story! I guess it was "meant to be"!

Please keep them coming... I'd love to hear more about yours and Barbara's love story.

sgm, your right, it was meant to be. We knew each other for, lets see, 35 years, 1 month and 15 days. Pretty close to the minute. Damn, that was a long time. Yep, meant to be for sure.

I miss her a great deal.

:-(

Heather, you haven't heard the horse back riding story. That was almost the end of the story before it hardly even began.

my heart is breaking but full of joy at the same time... could that be possible? it's breaking at the reminiscence of this beautiful memory, that seems so distant when you think about it but when you close your eyes it feels like it happened only yesterday... and full of joy at the thought that wherever barbara may be right this moment, she could be relishing at the thought of this memory, too.

mom says thank you for your birthday wishes but wonders who "tony" is ~ she doesn't know of my blog and this "other" world.

Tony - it is Tony, isn't it? And I hope you don't mind a virtual-virtual stranger using your given name - that was a beautiful and evocative memory. Once again, thank you so much for sharing.

Lovely memories. It's always neat to find out how people met. I really enjoyed the other stories about the boat & the lake, too. Thanks for sharing & keep it coming, if you want.

Jacqueline, I sent you an email birthday card yesterday but tonight when I got home, I saw that it wasn't delivered. Send me an email so I can make sure you get it.

Yes, sgm, it was.

Heather, wonderful beginning, end and everything in between.

Sasha, I've been going through the same thing for 2 weeks now. Relief that she is no longer having to go through it, tears and sadness from missing her and joy in the life we were blessed to have together for so long. I'm still sorting it out.

About your mom, just make up somebody, like from work or something. Or, how about tell her I'm your sugar daddy. Or, oh, you'll figure out something. ;-)

Deadly Female, ooooo, a newby. Yep, Tony is the name and I don't mind the least you calling by my first name. I don't care what you call me as long as you call me. Hehehe, that was a joke. I'm glad you enjoyed the story. Thanks.

QueenOfDenial, Libby, Mel, please be patient, I'll post 'em as the mood strikes. Last night, I was just in the mood. I was scanning some pictures for my step mom. They were of my step brother who passed away about 5 years ago. When I came across a box of pictures from our wedding. I scanned some of my step mom, my late father and some of her old friends. Then I decided to scan some of Barbara and I, and then the story idea came to mind, and well, you read the result. Ta Da!

30Something, memories are all I have left. I just so glad that am able to remember the details so well. And writing them down, helps me even more.

QueenOfDenial, by then I was finally able to grow my hair (mom gave me crew cuts my whole life) so kept it long, even longer than the pic, for quite a few years.

Thanks for sharing that with us, Tony. I think this is the reason the "three day rule" should be observed. "It's him...hurry!" That's beautiful.

Such a beautiful story and a little surreal that I know the places you speak of.

I can't wait to read more.

Awww...what a sweet story. And horseback riding isn't such a bad first date. I think it's kind of cool.

That is so sweet. And I think horseback riding is the perfect first date. So romantic.
